The type of house you will be allocated will depend on the size of your family and houses currently available. The school follows the DET policy on allocating housing – for more information please speak to one of the Administration team at the school. Some problems have arisen in the past, with regard to the housing available to teaching staff, so please be aware that any information you receive regarding specific housing needs to be verified prior to arrival. Detailed descriptions and possibly photographs of your allocated housing can be obtained from your 'Buddy'.

Silver City

Housing in Silver City area was completed in 1974 and provides prefabricated three bedroom accommodation. Land is the size of an average to large suburban block. Houses are approximately 120 square metres in size with living areas, verandah and carport. Some have vinyl flooring, others have ceramic tiles. Flooring can be difficult to clean as floor coverings are usually old and have lost much of their sealant.

There are two types of prefabricated house. Some have a shower over the bath and others have a shower recess and full bath. Some houses have a small storeroom. All houses are air- conditioned, usually one airconditioner is positioned in the main bedroom and the other in the living area. Ceiling fans and insect screens are fitted. While lawns are established, water restrictions, which are applied from time to time, can set back most gardens.

Silver City Sub-Division

The housing area was cleared and developed in 1994. Houses are of fibro construction and consist of 2 or 3 bedroom dwellings. These houses are quite spacious and many have excellent views of the ocean and jungle. Most of these houses are raised and have stairs leading up to the front door.

Family accommodation is similar to that at Drumsite.

Drumsite

Housing in the Drumsite area is located close to the Christmas Island District High School and is older in style but larger in area. Almost all houses are of double brick construction with metal frame windows and air conditioners, and contain either two or three bedrooms. Ceiling fans are fitted. Bathrooms in the Drumsite houses have shower recesses and baths in some cases.
