All Western Australian public schools are reviewed every three years by the Department of Education’s Public School Accountability directorate. A review gives assurance to the local community, the Minister for Education and Training and the Director General that a school is operating effectively and delivering high quality education to its students. The review acknowledges the achievements of the school and gives feedback to support the principal and staff with their improvement planning.

"It is pleasing to read about the highly united, collaborative and supportive work environment created at the school.  This complements the strong respect and value for community, environment and cultural diversity in pursuit of achievement and excellence evident in the report"

Stephen Baxter - A/Deputy Director General, Schools

Principal's Message

Preparing students for the brightest possible future, Christmas Island District High School is committed to meeting the diverse needs, passions and aspirations of every learner. Located 360 km southwest of Java and 2,300 km northwest of Perth, our unique island setting shapes a school community that is connected, supportive and globally aware.

We cater for students from Kindergarten to Year 12, with more than 270 students across our main campus and the Tom Paterson Kindergarten Centre. Our teachers and education assistants are appointed through a rigorous merit-based selection process, ensuring high-quality teaching and strong professional expertise. As a well-resourced school, we maintain small class sizes and provide targeted support in literacy, numeracy, information and communications technology, and pastoral care. We also value and celebrate the island’s rich linguistic heritage, offering students the opportunity to learn Mandarin or Bahasa Malay.

In our senior school program students can pursue both ATAR and General pathways. Our General pathway includes vocational opportunities such as Certificate II Engineering and Outdoor Recreation. Students can also participate in endorsed programs including structured workplace learning, PADI certification and Recreational Skippers Tickets. Where specialist subjects cannot be delivered face-to-face, we work closely with the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) to ensure access to a broad curriculum. Students in Years 7–10 may also participate in the Department of Education’s online GATE program, further extending high-achieving learners.

Christmas Island District High School is a safe, secure and inclusive environment where community, cultural diversity, environmental stewardship and innovation are highly valued. We are committed to supporting every student to achieve their personal best.

Our whole-school Positive Behaviour program fosters a warm and caring learning environment. Students are explicitly taught and encouraged to demonstrate our focus behaviours: Show Respect, Be Responsible and Challenge Yourself.

Students learn in a technology-rich environment with access to tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters and iPads. Our one-to-one laptop program in secondary school supports the development of critical 21st-century skills, empowering students to become capable and informed global citizens. The Trade Training Centre further enhances learning by providing opportunities to apply design thinking and technologies to real-world challenges.

Our library offers an inviting space for research, study and reading. Beyond the classroom, our spectacular natural environment provides an extraordinary context for learning across science, humanities, the arts and outdoor education. Through our strong partnership with Parks Australia, students participate in the Crab Cadets, Junior Rangers, and Bush Rangers Level 1 and 2 programs, fostering leadership, environmental responsibility and connection to place. Here, students’ natural curiosity is nurtured and developed, inspiring a lifelong love of learning.
